Background of the case

Journalist Abdurrahman Gök, who was detained during house raids carried out on 25 April 2023 as part of an investigation centred in Diyarbakır, had been imprisoned pending trial on charges of “membership in a terrorist organization."

In the indictment filed by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Gök’s news articles published by the Mezopotamya Agency, his social media posts, book reviews, certain books found in his library, Social Security Institution (SGK) records regarding his insurance being paid by the Mezopotamya Agency, and his telephone conversations with journalists were cited as evidence of the impugned crime. The indictment called for Gök to be tried and sentenced on charges of “membership in a terrorist organization” and “terrorism propaganda."

Gök was released at the second hearing held on 5 December 2023.
