Under Attack: A portrait of Turkey on Press Freedom Day

Under Attack, an exhibition documenting the pressure and violence facing journalists, can be viewed until 3 September

The exhibition Under Attack, which was compiled through the labor of journalists who have come under attack while carrying out their profession and who have themselves documented these attacks, was opened on 22 July 2022 at the Kıraathane İstanbul Literature House.

The exhibition was organized as a result of cooperation between Expression Interrupted and the Kıraathane as part of the commemoration of Turkey’s Press Freedom Day on 24 July. It seeks to draw attention to the working conditions of the country’s journalists – an issue often lost from sight amid the daily flow of news.

“The photography exhibition Under Attack consists of photographs that document the resilience shown by independent members of the press in reaching the news in spite of the obstructions, mistreatment and even violence which have been increasing steadily in recent years,” Mustafa Ünlü, the president of the P24 Platform for Independent Journalism and one of the curators of the exhibition, said in a note marking the opening. “In the not-too-distant future, the great majority of those who govern countries and the governed will surely realize that there can be no democracy or welfare without a free press. Aware of this, we leave these moments here as a record of history.”

The exhibition, which will remain open until 3 September, includes photographs by journalists Fatoş Erdoğan, Hayri Tunç, Emre Orman, Ali Öz, Vedat Arık, Hacı Bişkin, Ozan Acıdere and Ersan Kınık. In addition to the photographs, the documentary film Journalism under Attack, which was produced by Expression Interrupted and first released on 10 January 2022, will be shown throughout the exhibition.
