The court has decided to separate the journalist's case since the arrest warrant issued on Dündar has not been executed for a long time

CANSU PİŞKİN, ISTANBUL

The 25th hearing in the trial of journalists Can Dündar and İnan Kızılkaya on charges of “insulting a public official” was held at the İstanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance on 12 December 2024.

Dündar's lawyer was present at the hearing, which was monitored by P24. Kızılkaya and his lawyer did not attend the hearing.

The prosecutor repeated their final opinion on the case presented in the previous hearing and asked for the file of Can Dündar, who has a warrant for his arrest, to be separated for his defense. The prosecutor demanded that İnan Kızılkaya, whose interrogation was completed, be sentenced for “publicly insulting a public official.”

Dündar's lawyer stated that the final opinion was given in favor of Kızılkaya and therefore they had nothing to say against the final opinion.

The court sentenced İnan Kızılkaya to TL 7,80 judicial fine on the charge of “insulting a public official.” The court decided to separate the journalist's case since it is understood that the arrest warrant issued against Dündar has not been executed for a long time and this situation has delayed the trial.

In the indictment filed by prosecutor Murat İnam upon the complaint of then İstanbul 1st Criminal Judge of Peace Bekir Altun, the charges against Dündar and Kızılkaya are based on the news article titled “The most useful judge of the palace regime” published in the June 22, 2016 issue of now-defunct Özgür Gündem daily while Dündar was the editor-in-chief on duty.
