Journalists and academics bear the brunt of the massive crackdown on freedom of expression in Turkey. Scores of them are currently subject to criminal investigations or behind bars. This website is dedicated to tracking the legal process against them.
The number of journalists who are known to be in custody as part of Turkey’s post-coup attempt investigation has reached 39, following the release of additional detention warrants for 47 journalists on July 27.
The new list comes one day after a court issued detention warrants for 42 journalists, bringing the total of journalists treated as suspects in the investigation to 89. A majority of those on the list are former columnists, editors and reporters for the now defunct Zaman Newspaper, affiliated with the Fethullah Gülen Movement.
The journalists on this list are suspected of having “unjustly acquired state advertising funds by manipulating sales figures,” “membership in a terrorist organization,” and “attempting to overthrow the government of the Republic of Turkey, or attempting to partially or completely prevent it from performing duties.”
In the latest detentions, Bülent Mumay, a former editor of Hürriyet daily’s online publications, was taken into custody on July 26.
On July 27, former Zaman writers Şahin Alpay, Nuriye Akman, Ali Bulaç and Mümtazer Türköne were detained.
Hilmi Yavuz, an octogenarian Turkish poet, is among those included on the latest detentions list.
According to a news report from Hürriyet, at least 11 journalists were detained early July 27 morning as part of the post-coup investigation.
On Wednesday, Cumhuriyet reported that Lokman E., a co-owner of the local Manşet Newspaper in Çorum Province was taken into custody on July 26.
A large number of journalists had already been detained in the operations conducted after the failed coup of July 15. Authorities have said the journalists have been detained as part of a probe into the media arm of the “FETÖ/PYD terrorist organization.”
Also on July 27, a decree having the power of law – sanctioned under Turkey’s State of Emergency declaration – was issued by the government, shutting down three news agencies, 16 television stations, 23 radio stations, 45 newspapers, 15 magazines and 29 publishers.
