Jailed journalist Çetin Çiftçi, the former parliamentary correspondent for the shuttered Bugün newspaper, tested positive for Covid-19. Çiftçi’s wife, Selda Çiftçi, announced on social media that her husband was already hospitalized when he was diagnosed with Covid-19.

Çiftçi was arrested on 30 September 2019 on the charge of “membership of a terrorist organization” and was jailed pending trial in Sincan Prison. In February 2020, Çiftçi was convicted as charged and sentenced to 6 years and 3 months by the 32nd High Criminal Court of Ankara.

Selda Çiftçi said that her husband had suffered a heart attack before being jailed and throughout his imprisonment he had to be hospitalized a few times due to high blood pressure and tachycardia. Çetin Çiftçi was transferred to the hospital on 11 May, where the next day he was diagnosed with Covid-19.

Selda Çiftçi said that until 20 May, she couldn’t get information about her husband currently receiving treatment at the Dışkapı Hospital in Ankara. She said: “Today [on 20 May] for the first time I was called from the prison to be informed about my husband’s condition. I am worried about the health of my husband who is also suffering from a heart condition.”
