Mizgin Çay, a staff member of the local radio station Radyo Karacadağ, was arrested on October 5, 2016 along with two other employees of the radio channel and a politician from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) on the ground of spreading propaganda for the PKK.

A court in Şanlıurfa, where Radyo Karacadağ was broadcasting, ordered her and two colleagues jailed pending trial on charges of “terrorist group membership.”

Radyo Karacadağ, broadcasting in Kurdish, Arabic and Turkish, was closed down on September 30, 2016 with a statutory decree issued as part of the State of Emergency.

Çay was later released from pre-trial detention.
