Hülya Karakaya, the former responsible managing editor of the leftist, pro-Kurdish Özgür Halk magazine, was arrested in August 2016 at the Diyarbakır airport as she was about to get on a plane to Istanbul. Jailed pending trial on the charge of "membership of a terrorist organization," Karakaya was sent to the Diyarbakır E Type Closed Prison.

Karakaya's trial was overseen by the 13th High Criminal Court of Istanbul. The court ruled to release Karakaya pending trial under judicial control measures at the fifth hearing of her trial in July 2017.
